I think audience research is one of the most important ways you can plan to make your work successful. This is because it means you can hear first hand from your target market and get opinions from the people who are interested in your product.
The first method of audience feedback we got was after we created a survey on the website Survey Monkey and got a variety of different people to answer it. The questions included "How often do you watch music videos?" and "Do you prefer Performance, Concept of Narrative based videos?". The answers then helped us map out what sort of video we were to create and also help us both to plan each of our ancillary tasks.
The second method of audience feedback we a focus group. We selected people from our target market and decided to let them listen to the song to see whether it is something they would be interested in watching a video for. We captured the results on audio and this also in turn helped us to plan what direction we were to take our music video.
Me and my group partner both thought that getting audience feedback both before and after was essential to see if we had succeeded within our task. This is why we both individually interviewed some people to ask them what they thought of our video and how they think we could have improved it. It was extremely useful having people from our target audience explain their opinions to us and it was great to get more first hand feedback that hadn't been watered down in any way because it was an informal chat between two people.
To get a more broad overview of the sorts of things our audience liked at the beginning, I also analysed and watched many music videos from the indie genre. This included existing videos of The Maccabees. This helped because it meant we could see the codes and conventions these types of videos used but also see the response from the audience from the amount of views, likes and comments on the video.
Lastly, we also utilized social media on Web 2.0 to get our survey out to the public. We used Twitter and Facebook by putting the link to the survey and getting responses from people that we didn't know, this helped us to get more variety within the answers we received and hopefully helped us to get a more balanced result for us to then create a promotional package more tailored to our markets' needs.
